Our organization was founded as Hereford Volunteer Ambulance Association Inc. in October of 1953, when the First-Aid Division of Hereford Volunteer Fire Company spun off into a separate organization. Since that time, the Hereford Volunteer Ambulance Association and the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company have shared similar names, territory, and stakeholders.
In the 70 years between 1953 and 2023, it became clear that sharing a name and place with the Fire Company was not compatible with the future success of our organization. Far too often community members and stakeholders were not aware or were confused by the similar names of our organizations. Because our organization has always been based in Monkton, Maryland, our organization chose the Monkton name to carry us into the future. Our name change also includes moving to using the term “Emergency Medical Services” in place of “Ambulance.” When the organization was founded in 1953, the term Emergency Medical Services did not exist. In the modern era of pre-hospital care, Emergency Medical Services has become the industry standard name for the services we provide.
Because of these needs to modernize and create our unique brand for the future, Hereford Volunteer Ambulance Association began doing business as Monkton Volunteer Emergency Medical Services in 2024. Monkton Volunteer EMS looks forward to providing the same services we have provided for over 70 years to our community under our new name.
